Musical Instruments as Carry-on Baggage

You can bring a musical instrument like a flute, violin, or guitar as part of your carry-on baggage if it fits within the size requirements for carry-on items.

  • It can be safely placed in the overhead bin or
  • It can be securely placed under the front seat.

Musical Instruments on a Paid Seat

If your musical instrument is too big for your carry-on baggage, you can buy a seat for it at a 50% discount on the regular price (including the lowest price available). If you are traveling in Signature Class, your musical instrument will be placed in the Economy/Premium Economy Class.

Restrictions on Weight and Size. If you want to buy a seat for your musical instrument, make sure it is not taller or longer than 162.5cm/64in and does not weigh more than 80lb/36kg.

If you want to buy a seat for your musical instrument or need more information, contact Air Canada after you book your flight. Make sure to do this at least 48 hours before your flight departs.

Musical Instruments as Checked Baggage

If you can’t or don’t want to carry your musical instrument, you can also check it in.

Points to be remembered

  • Make sure to pack your musical instrument in a strong and protective container made for shipping similar items. This is important because your instrument may experience significant changes in pressure and temperature during transit. To avoid any potential damage, make sure to loosen the strings.
  • Your musical instrument will be considered as a separate piece of baggage.
  • If you have more baggage than the maximum allowed for your ticket, you will need to pay extra fees.
