Can My Pet Travel in the Passenger Cabin?

Pets that meet these qualifications are allowed to travel in the passenger cabin:

• To travel, dogs and cats need to be at least 8 weeks old. We do not accept French bulldogs and bulldogs.

• You can only have small cats and dogs as pets. If you need to transport birds, rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, marmots, chipmunks, squirrels, or chinchillas, please contact Japan Airlines Reservations.
• Pets should be healthy, friendly towards other animals and people, and should not have a bad smell. We do not accept pets that are pregnant.
• You can only bring one pet in a container with you on the plane. Each passenger is allowed to have one container. The container must meet the carry-on baggage requirements of Japan Airlines. Animals that are traveling as baggage are not counted as part of your free baggage allowance.
• It is the responsibility of the passenger to confirm and prepare all necessary import/export documents for travel. They should also make arrangements with the appropriate quarantine offices. Make sure to contact the right consulate, embassy, and quarantine offices ahead of time to learn about import/export rules before you travel. You need to bring all the necessary import/export documents to the Japan Airlines check-in counter on the day of your travel.

Can my pet travel as checked baggage?

Pets that meet certain qualifications are allowed to travel as checked baggage.

• Your pet can stay in its kennel for the whole flight without any discomfort.
• The kennel fulfills all the necessary requirements.
• Make sure your pet has all the necessary health documents for your destination.

Kennel Requirements

• Ensure that there are no leaks or ways to get out.
• Make sure the container has good ventilation, but make sure no part of the animal sticks out.
• Make sure there is ample space for the animal to stand and move around comfortably.
• It should be made of metal, wood, or a durable plastic/composite material.
• Use material or litter that can absorb liquid.
• The kennel has handles on the outside that are functional. These handles help prevent the kennel from tilting and ensure that there is no direct contact with the animals.
• Make sure to close it tightly, but don’t lock it.
• Make sure to put labels on the crate’s top and at least one side. The labels should have the words “Live Animal” written in letters that are at least 1 inch tall.
• Please add labels with upright arrows to indicate the correct position of the kennel.
