United has made a permanent change to its policy and removed the fees for changing standard Economy (excluding Basic Economy), Economy Plus, United First, United Business, and United Premium Plus tickets when you’re traveling.

Tips Related Flight Change

• Within 24 hours of purchase, all United Airlines tickets (even those for Basic Economy) may be canceled for a full refund.
• If your flight is within the United States or if it is an international flight departing from the United States, there will be no change charge (even for award tickets). 
  • This applies to all Economy (except Basic) and Premium Cabin tickets. 
  • But you will need to pay the fare difference if your new ticket is more expensive. 
• You can change the following tickets without paying a change fee: 
  • Tickets for Basic Economy must be issued by April 30, 2021.
  • International tickets in both Standard Economy and Premium cabins must be issued by January 31, 2022. 
• Basic Economy tickets can now be canceled for a trip refund that can be used at a later date: 
  • On domestic flights for USD 49.50 (one-way) and USD 99 (round-trip).
  • On international flights for USD 99.50 (one-way) and USD 199 (round-trip). 

The amount of travel credit you will receive is the price of your ticket minus the fee for canceling. You can use this credit to travel at a later time.

• Travel credits, including electronic travel certificates, usually have an expiration date of one year from the date they are issued. The expiration date for travel credits and electronic certificates that were set to expire on or before December 31, 2022, has been extended to December 31, 2023.
• You have the option to change your flight multiple times, but you will need to pay the fare difference each time you make a change.
• If you’re unsure about when you want to travel again, you don’t have to immediately select a new flight. You have the option to choose a flight credit, which you must use within one year from the date your original ticket was issued.
• If the cost of your new flight is lower, you may receive a credit for the difference in price towards a future flight, as long as the rules of your fare allow it.
• Traveling for free or at a discounted rate through rewards or loyalty programs. If you have an award ticket for Economy or Premium Economy, you can change your flight without any fees if you are traveling within the U.S. or internationally from the U.S.
• If you received travel credit for a flight you booked with a travel agency, you must use the credit with that same travel agency.
• You no longer have to pay a fee to change to an earlier flight on the same day.
• MileagePlus Premier members can change to an earlier flight without paying any extra fees.
• If you buy group fares through United’s Group Desk, you may still have to pay a fee if you want to make changes to your booking.
